Iran, Republicans in the House block vote on war powers motion, risked being defeated

22 Maggio 2026

(Adnkronos) – The Republican leadership of the House suddenly canceled the vote on the resolution to limit Donald Trump’s ability to continue the war with Iran because the majority risked being defeated due to several absences. Democratic leaders criticized the move, stating that “the Republican-controlled House continues to act as a wholly controlled branch of the Trump administration”.

Since the beginning of the war, last February 28, Democrats have presented, both in the House and in the Senate, several times the motion invoking the War Powers Act, a law approved in 1973 that requires the president to cease conflicts in the absence of congressional authorization. In recent days in the Senate, again due to Republican absences, the motion received initial approval in a procedural vote.

“Republicans cowardly canceled a vote already scheduled on the War Powers Resolution, which would have passed with bipartisan support and would have asked the president to end the conflict in the Middle East,” reads the statement from Democratic leaders. “We are on the eve of Memorial Day with gas and food prices rising, we had a vote on the war wanted by the president that would have passed, we undoubtedly had the votes and they knew it and they are playing games, cheating and postponing the vote,” said Gregory Meeks, the Democratic leader of the Foreign Affairs Committee who presented the motion.
