Tokyo, May 22 (Jiji Press)–Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi spoke with his Iranian counterpart, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, by telephone on Friday and urged Iran to allow all ships, including those related to Japan, to safely pass through the Strait of Hormuz. During the phone talks, Araghchi briefed Motegi on the status of U.S.-Iran negotiations. The top Japanese diplomat expressed strong hope that the two countries will resume their negotiations soon. This was the sixth phone meeting between the Japanese and Iranian foreign ministers since the United States and Israel attacked Iran. Motegi told Araghchi that communication between the foreign ministers is beneficial as the situation involving Iran is reaching a critical phase. They agreed to continue talks to calm the situation as soon as possible. Motegi also called for the swift resolution of the case of a Japanese citizen detained in Iran and released in April.
