Nikkei Average Jumps over 2,100 Points in Morning

21 Maggio 2026

Tokyo, May 21 (Jiji Press)–Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average briefly soared over 2,100 points in morning trading Thursday, led by purchases prompted by easing tensions in the Middle East. At 10:24 a.m. the index of 225 selected issues listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Prime section surged 2,158.18 points, or 3.61 pct, from Wednesday’s closing to stand at 61,962.59. On Wednesday, the Nikkei finished below 60,000 for the first time in about three weeks. A wide range of Japanese stocks attracted buying after key U.S. indexes rose in overnight trading as crude oil prices fell on hopes for an end to the U.S.-Iran conflict. The sentiment was fueled by remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump that negotiations with Iran are in the final stages, market sources said. In particular, high-tech shares, including semiconductor-related issues, attracted strong buying in the Tokyo market. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
