(Adnkronos) – The Finnish Prime Minister, Petteri Orpo, has invited several European Union leaders to Rovaniemi on September 13 and 14 for a summit dedicated to the Arctic, with the aim of strengthening a common EU strategy towards a region increasingly relevant in geopolitical and security terms.
“The Arctic is an increasingly important part of the European security environment. The European Union has direct interests in its stability, security, and sustainable development,” Orpo stated, emphasizing the importance of addressing these issues together with a broad group of European leaders. According to local media, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal, Latvian President Andris Kulbergs, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, and Romanian President Nicusor Dan are expected to attend the summit. The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, will also be present.
During the meeting, the leaders of the EU countries and European institutions will be hosted for dinner by Finnish President Alexander Stubb. The Arctic summit is part of a series of meetings organized by Orpo in recent years: in December 2025, the summit on the European eastern flank was held in Helsinki, while in December 2024, Saariselka hosted a summit on European security challenges.
