Tehran’s proposal to US: negotiate on nuclear after Hormuz reopening

27 Aprile 2026

(Adnkronos) – A new proposal for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the end of the war, and negotiations on the controversial Iranian nuclear program to be initiated in a second phase, has been presented by Iran to the United States through Pakistani mediators. This is reported by Axios, citing an American official and two informed sources, and writes that amidst the diplomatic stalemate and divisions within the Iranian leadership over potential nuclear concessions, the proposal would bypass the sticking point to move more quickly towards an agreement by starting nuclear talks after the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the end of the naval blockade. As part of the ‘solution’ from the Iranian perspective, – according to Axios – an extension of the truce, which has halted US and Israeli military operations against Iran and Tehran’s ‘response’, or an agreement for the definitive end of the conflict, is foreseen.

According to a source, over the weekend, Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, reportedly told mediators from Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar that there is no consensus within the leadership of the Islamic Republic on how to address the demands of the United States, which, among other things, wants Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment program for at least ten years.

Trump’s staff, a source reported, is expected to discuss the negotiation stalemate and possible next steps in the coming hours. No comment from the powerful Pakistani military and Islamabad’s Foreign Ministry. Olivia Wales, White House spokesperson, told Axios that these are “delicate diplomatic talks” and that “the United States will not negotiate through the press.”
