Japan’s Akazawa Told Not to Comment on Monetary Policy

14 Aprile 2026

Tokyo, April 14 (Jiji Press)–Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama have urged trade minister Ryosei Akazawa not to comment on monetary policy, Katayama said Tuesday. In a television program aired by the Japan Broadcasting Corp., or NHK, on Sunday, Akazawa said that raising interest rates is an option the Bank of Japan could take to address the yen’s depreciation and curb rising prices. “Specific methods of monetary policy should be left to the BOJ,” Katayama told a press conference. She declined to comment on the central bank’s monetary policy meeting scheduled for April 27-28. Akazawa echoed her remark at a press conference Tuesday. The market previously saw a 70 pct chance of an April interest rate hike, but the figure has fallen to around 30 pct due to uncertainty posed by the Middle East tensions. Takaichi, seen as a proponent of monetary easing, took action apparently because she did not want Akazawa’s remark to rekindle speculation of rate hikes. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
