(Adnkronos) – Nations must make diplomatic efforts to make sure vessels can safely transit the Strait of Hormuz – through which a fifth of the world’s oil is shipped – Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Monday.
“With regard to Hormuz, I believe diplomacy must prevail,” Tajani said.
Tajani was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a European Union Council meeting in Brussels on Monday at which the United-States-Israel war on Iran and the escalating crisis in the Middle East topped the agenda.
“We need major diplomatic endeavours to ensure freedom of navigation through Hormuz. This is not just of interest to Europe but to the rest of the world, including China,” Tajani stated.
At least 16 tankers have been attacked in the strait of Hormuz since the war started on 28 February and Iran has threatened to lay explosive mines in the waterway.
