Dollar Hits 20-Month Highs above 159.60 Yen in Tokyo

13 Marzo 2026

Tokyo, March 13 (Jiji Press)–The dollar hit 20-month highs above 159.60 yen in Tokyo trading Friday as persisting worries about the Middle East situation spurred safe-haven buying of the U.S. currency. The greenback pared its gains to stand at 159.41-44 yen at 4 p.m., still up from 158.79-80 yen at 5 p.m. Thursday. The dollar firmed on worries that the fighting between U.S.-Israeli forces and Iran may be prolonged. A social media post by U.S. President Donald Trump urging the public to “watch what happens” to Iran fueled buying in afternoon trading in Tokyo. The greenback’s advance then narrowed slightly amid investor caution over a possible rate check or market intervention by Japanese authorities. Meanwhile in Tokyo stock trading, the Nikkei 225 average finished 633.35 points, or 1.16 pct, lower from Thursday at 53,819.61. It fell over 1,100 points in early trading before swiftly regaining some ground thanks to buying on dips. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
