(Adnkronos) – Tycoon Jimmy Lai will not appeal after the conviction under the controversial “national security” law imposed by Beijing on Hong Kong, a former British colony increasingly within Beijing’s orbit. Lai’s lawyers, a British citizen and former director of a newspaper symbolic of the pro-democracy front in Hong Kong, made this known. As reported by the BBC, they said they had received “clear and definitive” instructions to that effect from their client. However, no reason was given.
Jimmy Lai, 78, was sentenced to 20 years in prison last month for “conspiracy” for publishing “seditious” material and for “collusion with foreign forces.” The man – detained since 2020 – has always denied all charges.
