(Adnkronos) – Three people died in a helicopter crash last night in southeastern Libya, during a medical evacuation operation organized by armed forces loyal to Marshal Khalifa Haftar. The Libyan news agency Lana reported this, specifying that the aircraft crashed while it was engaged in an urgent mission to transport a soldier from the Souboul al-Salam battalion, who was injured in an accident on a desert road near the Matan al-Sarrah military base, as explained by the rescue services spokesperson. The victims are two members of the military transport unit and a battalion nurse.
The Matan al-Sarrah airbase, located about 1,500 kilometers from Tripoli, in the extreme south of Libya, is considered strategic due to its proximity to the borders with Chad and Sudan. According to some local media, including the al-Wasat website and Libya al-Ahrar television, there were also two foreigners on board the helicopter, who reportedly died in the impact. The authorities in eastern Libya have not released official communications on the incident, and the causes of the crash remain unknown at present.
