Nagoya, Jan. 29 (Jiji Press)–The Toyota Motor Corp. group took the top spot in global vehicle sales for the sixth consecutive year in 2025, thanks chiefly to the popularity of its hybrid vehicles in North America, data showed Thursday. The Japanese automaker’s strong performance also reflected the recovery from the fallout of a test fraud scandal. The Toyota group, including subsidiaries Daihatsu Motor Co. and Hino Motors Ltd., saw its global vehicle sales climb 4.6 pct from the previous year, reaching a record high of over 11.32 million units. The figure surpassed German automaker Volkswagen Group’s 8.98 million units. For Toyota alone, global sales rose 3.7 pct to a record 10.53 million units. Global sales of Daihatsu jumped 15.5 pct. Suzuki Motor Corp. saw a 1.4 pct increase in its sales, backed by its strong performance in India and Africa. The other five major Japanese automakers logged sales falls. Global sales of Honda Motor Co. sagged 7.5 pct to 3.52 million units, due to severer price competition in China. Sales of Nissan Motor Co. were sluggish globally, falling 4.4 pct to 3.2 million units. Sales of Mitsubishi Motors Corp. fell 5.8 pct to 810,000 units. In 2025, combined domestic sales of eight major Japanese automakers stood at 4.17 million units, up 3.2 pct. In addition to Toyota, Daihatsu and Suzuki, which had robust performances, Subaru Corp., which released a new model of its Forester SUV, logged increased sales in Japan, as did Mazda Motor Corp., whose mainstay SUV sales expanded. Meanwhile, domestic sales went down 15.2 pct at Nissan, 7.3 pct at Honda and 1.3 pct at Mitsubishi. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
