Minnesota, judge orders release of all refugees detained by Ice

29 Gennaio 2026

(Adnkronos) – A federal judge in Minnesota has ordered Ice to stop the arrest and deportation of refugees legally admitted to the United States and to immediately release those detained for review of their cases. “Refugees have the legal right to be in the United States, to work and live peacefully and, most importantly, the right not to be subjected to the terror of arrest and detention without warrant or reason in their homes and while going to church or the supermarket,” said Judge John Tunheim, who issued a restrictive order for the release of at least 100 refugees arrested during Donald Trump’s indiscriminate anti-immigrant police raids.

An appeal against this ruling is expected from the Trump administration, which stated in recent weeks that it will review thousands of asylum grants to refugees who arrived during Joe Biden’s presidency and have not yet obtained a green card, to ensure, it was stated, that there have been no frauds.
