(Adnkronos) – The city of Palio woke up covered in white. An extraordinary and unexpected snowfall has fallen on Siena. Municipal workers are busy clearing the streets. Palazzo Pubblico advises limiting car use and driving cautiously, traveling with supplementary grip devices (chains or winter tires on board). Following the snowfall and the consequent formation of ice, for today schools of all levels in the municipal area are closed. Day centers and socialization centers for the elderly and disabled in the municipal area, and the “Renzo Corsi” school camp in Viale Avignone, are also closed.
Although aware of the inconveniences that may arise, the municipal administration has opted for this choice to avoid traffic and mobility problems, given the precipitation and the formation of ice on the roads. There are no particular critical issues, but at the moment, in some city streets, traffic is still congested due to the presence of buses stuck across the roadway, not equipped with supplementary grip devices.
Workers from the Municipality of Siena and Civil Protection personnel were immediately activated. Approximately forty people are at work, including laborers and staff on the municipal roads; five salt spreaders on small vehicles, five salt spreaders and plows on large vehicles, and two salt spreaders with external operators are being used to clear main and secondary arteries, also preventing ice formation with several quintals of salt. The Local Police were also immediately activated.
