EXCLUSIVE: Japanese Panel to Discuss Municipal Roles

8 Gennaio 2026

Tokyo, Jan. 8 (Jiji Press)–An advisory panel to Japan’s prime minister will launch discussions as early as Jan. 19 on the roles of municipal governments and large cities, people familiar with the matter told Jiji Press. In June last year, a study group set up by the internal affairs ministry called for prefectures to handle more work on behalf of municipalities, which struggle with severe labor shortages. The Local Government System Research Council, the advisory panel, will review the roles of prefectures and municipalities, based on the proposal from the study group. The council will also discuss the roles of large cities, including a proposal that designated major cities take over some responsibilities from prefectures. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
