(Adnkronos) – A few hours after Matt Gaetz resigned as Attorney General, Donald Trump called former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to head the nation’s top law enforcement agency.
Trump made the announcement of the appointment in a post on social media Thursday evening. “I am proud to announce the former Attorney General of the great State of Florida, Pam Bondi, as our next United States Attorney General. Pam has been a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, where she has been very tough on violent criminals,” he stated, stressing that “for too long, the Justice Department has been used as a weapon against me and other Republicans – no more.” “Pam will refocus the Justice Department on its purpose of fighting crime and making America safe again. I have known Pam for many years – she is smart and tenacious, and she is an ‘America First’ fighter, who will do a great job as Attorney General!”.
Should Bondi be confirmed by the Senate in the coming months, it would be a reward for years of loyalty to Trump, which began during the 2016 election campaign, when she became an outspoken but fierce advocate for his candidacy. She also helped with Trump’s legal defense during his first impeachment trial, parroted claims that the 2020 election had been stolen and continued to work as a surrogate during the 2024 campaign, when she attended Trump’s criminal trial in New York.
