(Adnkronos) – One of the two men accused of the Bondi Beach massacre in Australia, which claimed the lives of at least 15 people, was an Indian citizen. This has been confirmed by the Indian Police. “Sajid Akram is originally from Hyderabad, India,” announced the Police of Telangana state, in the south of the Asian giant. “He emigrated to Australia in search of work in November 1998.”
“According to information gathered through relatives in India, Sajid Akram had limited contact with his family in Hyderabad over the past 27 years,” they specified. “He visited India six times after moving to Australia, mainly for family reasons, such as property matters or visits to elderly relatives.” However, they emphasized, “he was not in India for his father’s death,” and the Telangana Police are not aware of any “unfavorable antecedents.”
“Relatives say they know nothing of his extremist spirit or activities, nor of the circumstances that led to his radicalization,” they concluded. “The factors that led to the radicalization of Sajid Akram and his son Naveed appear to have no connection with India.” Sajid Akram, 50, was killed on the day of the massacre, while Naveed Akram, 24, an Australian citizen, was injured and remains hospitalized.
