Austria, hijab banned in schools for under 14s, Parliament’s approval

11 Dicembre 2025

(Adnkronos) – In Austria, girls under 14 will no longer be allowed to wear the Islamic veil, the hijab, inside schools. The Vienna Parliament decided this by approving the measure with a large majority. The proposal has already been challenged by activists and human rights groups who consider the measure discriminatory and fear it could lead to further divisions within society. According to the Austrian government, however, the ban on the Islamic veil aims to protect girls from ”oppression”.

The opposition Green party voted against the hijab ban, stating that it was unconstitutional.
