Ukraine-Russia war: Italy backs Kiev, wants ‘just peace’

9 Dicembre 2025

(Adnkronos) – Italy is “working hard” for a “just” peace to end Russia’s deadly war against Ukraine, the country’s top diplomat said Tuesday, echoing Pope Leo’s remarks after meeting the embattled former Soviet republic’s president Volodymyr Zelensky at Castel Gandolfo near Rome.

“We stand with Ukraine, we are not at war with Russia and are working hard for an accord between Ukraine and Russia, foreign minister Antonio Tajani said at a business gathering in Rome.

“But we want it to be a just peace,” Tajani told the Confesercenti association’s national assembly.

After his talks with Zelensky on Tuesday, Leo underlined “the need for the continuation of dialogue and expressed his urgent desire that the current diplomatic initiatives bring about a just and lasting peace,” according to a statement.

Zelensky’s meeting with the Pope and talks slated later on Tuesday with Italy’s premier Giorgia Meloni are part of efforts by Zelensky and European allies to revise a US-backed draft peace plan that was widely seen as favouring Moscow.
