(Adnkronos) – A banking scandal has left almost half of the Paraguayan population without access to their savings and has prompted President Santiago Peña to resign and thousands of people to take to the streets yesterday to protest. Congress has suspended Peña’s resignation pending the impeachment procedure. The president therefore remains provisionally in office. The seizure of Ueno Bank, linked to the Peña group, by the Central Bank two days ago, has frozen the deposits of about three million people, including pensioners, and has sparked protests across the country.
