(Adnkronos) – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is reportedly considering resigning and distancing himself from US President Donald Trump after the Republican defeat in the Midterm elections. The Independent writes this, citing its own sources and emphasizing that Rubio’s next step would be to run for president in the 2028 elections. In reality, even before the electoral debacle for the GOP, high-level sources within the Republican party in the United States and prominent figures in the British government had told the Independent that Rubio could leave his position in the Trump administration. The same sources confirmed that, after the Midterms, Rubio’s aspirations and expectations have strengthened. An internal source in Washington told the Independent that Rubio intends to “distance himself from the war against Iran and attribute responsibility for it to Trump.”
”Rubio is currently the leading candidate for the Republican nomination” and ”is definitely ahead of Vance,” added a source close to the Secretary of State, considering him favored over the American Vice President, who also intends to run in the next presidential elections. Rubio, however, ”cannot run” for the Republican nomination ”as long as he is still Secretary of State and, in any case, his ties to the administration would only harm his prospects,” so ”it is logical that he resigns and leaves the administration.”
