China, pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong sentenced to 10 years in prison

5 Novembre 2026

(Adnkronos) – Joshua Wong, face of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement since he was a teenager, has been sentenced to ten years in prison for “conspiring with foreign forces”, following a second conviction related to the security law. The BBC reports.

Wong, one of the leaders of the ‘umbrella’ movement, was convicted in 2020 after pleading guilty to organizing a protest outside police headquarters in the former British colony, which came under the sovereignty of the People’s Republic of China in 1997.

The activist first entered prison at the age of 23. Last month he turned 30.

The national security law in the city is considered a measure that has initiated a harsh crackdown on dissent, leading to the closure of critical news outlets and the dissolution of civil society organizations.
