(Adnkronos) – As polls opened today in Michigan, the Midwest state where one of the crucial battles for Senate control is taking place, over 2.4 million voters have already cast their ballots by mail or in person at early voting centers opened in recent days. According to data provided by the Michigan Department of State, and reported by the Detroit Free Press, 1.7 million mail-in ballots have been returned, while over 750,000 votes were cast at early voting centers open for at least nine days before Election Day. In total, approximately 33% of Michigan’s 7.4 million registered voters had voted before polls opened today at 7 AM local time.
On Election Day for the 2022 midterm elections, 1.5 million mail-in ballots were recorded as returned, ballots which ultimately reached 1.8 million out of a total of 4.5 million votes cast. At that time, there was no option for early in-person voting in Michigan, which was introduced by a referendum approved in that very election cycle.
In 2024, 1.2 million Michigan voters chose to vote early in person, a higher number than recorded today because presidential elections typically have a higher turnout. 2.2 million people voted early by mail, for a total of 3.4 million voters who cast their ballots before Election Day.
