(Adnkronos) – In Bangladesh, on the fourth day of protests by textile workers, the Police intervened with tear gas and stun grenades to disperse demonstrators in the capital Dhaka and industrial areas. The protests began last Saturday to demand an increase in the minimum wage, from the current 12,500 taka (the equivalent of about 90 euros) to 30,000 (about 215 euros). And on Sunday, the government established a commission tasked with working on the dossier. This morning, the Police confirmed that four people were arrested in the Mirpur district, Dhaka, where clashes between demonstrators and officers continued for about an hour.

Testimonies reported by the Dpa agency speak of hundreds of textile workers who took to the streets after the start of their work shift, and then gathered along a main road, blocking traffic during rush hour. Thus, according to the reconstruction, the officers intervened. And when some began to throw objects at the officers, the Police responded by intervening with tear gas and stun grenades. The situation returned to normal after the violent demonstrators were removed from the main road, according to the account of a Police officer, Touhidul Arif said.

Demonstrators also gathered in the industrial areas of Ashulia and Gazipur, outside Dhaka, and sections of the road connecting the capital to Tangail were blocked. Here, according to the Police, officers intervened using over 25 stun grenades to disperse the demonstrators, who set tires and rubbish on fire to block the highway.
