Belgium, De Wever resigns, king takes time and consults parties

2 Novembre 2026

(Adnkronos) – Government crisis in Belgium. The majority parties, the so-called Arizona coalition (Flemish autonomists of N-Va, Flemish socialists of Vooruit, French-speaking liberals of Mr, Flemish Christian Democrats of Cd&V and French-speaking centrists of Les Engagés) failed to reach an agreement on the 2027 budget law, which is why Prime Minister Bart De Wever (N-Va) went to the Royal Palace this morning, as reported by the Belgian newspaper Le Soir, to present his resignation to the King of the Belgians, Philip I.

At the end of the audience with De Wever, the Palace announced the sovereign’s decision. Bart De Wever submitted his resignation to Philip, “following the failure of budget negotiations,” which occurred between yesterday and today. The King, however, “is keeping the decision pending and, starting tomorrow, will initiate consultations with the presidents of the parties that make up the majority.” A round of consultations will therefore be held in the coming hours and days, which will also serve to gain time.
