(Adnkronos) – A few days before the November 3 midterm elections, Democrats see a possibility of winning a majority in the American Senate. According to four new CNN polls, the party’s candidates are ahead in Michigan and Texas, while the races in Maine and Kansas remain uncertain. In Michigan, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed is credited with 49% of voting intentions, against 42% for Republican Mike Rogers, while in Texas James Talarico is ahead with 49% against 43% for Ken Paxton. The other two races are more balanced: in Maine, Democrat Troy Jackson is at 49% against 45% for outgoing Republican Senator Susan Collins, while in Kansas Adam Hamilton gathers 49% of support against 45% for Republican Senator Roger Marshall. In both cases, however, the margins are within the polls’ margin of error and do not allow for identifying a favorite.
According to CNN, the results reflect a political climate unfavorable to President Donald Trump, whose approval rating is negative even in traditionally Republican states. In Texas and Kansas, in particular, Democratic candidates benefit from the unpopularity of their respective opponents, while in Michigan El-Sayed has managed to reunite his party’s electorate. To regain control of the Senate, Democrats must achieve a net gain of four seats, three of which could come precisely from the races examined. The outcome of the vote, however, remains uncertain: in three of the four states, at least one in eight voters, among those intending to go to the polls, states that they could still change their mind before November 3.
