Ukraine, Estonia to build 150 bunkers along the border with Russia

29 Ottobre 2026

(Adnkronos) – Estonia plans to build approximately 150 bunkers on the border with Russia, as part of efforts to strengthen its defensive readiness. This was stated to journalists by Estonian Defense Minister Martin Herem. According to reports from Estonian broadcaster Err, Herem stated that the bunkers will be built in the Ida-Virumaa region, on the border with Russia, with approximately 100 on state land and about 50 on private or municipal land. He did not provide details on the intended use of the bunkers.

The latest measures come in the context of continuous Russian threats to NATO’s eastern flank. In response to the intensifying Russian aggression in the region, Baltic states have placed a strong emphasis on strategic readiness in recent years, encouraging civilian preparedness and increasing defense spending. NATO officials have raised alarm over Russian drone incursions, airspace violations, sabotage, and other hybrid threats, while countries in the region have strengthened their air defenses.
