Serbia, students push for replacement of government agency leaders

29 Ottobre 2026

(Adnkronos) – The Serbian student movement, winner of the legislative elections, has called for the resignation of the heads of several key government bodies, including the police force and intelligence services, in an attempt to oust allies of the outgoing nationalist government. After almost two years of anti-government protests, the student-backed list achieved a historic victory in Sunday’s snap elections, ending Aleksandar Vucic’s Serbian Progressive Party (Sns)’s 14 years in power. In the following days, students pushed for a reform of state bodies, targeting figures the movement accuses of being subservient to Vučić’s party.

“With the elections, citizens have given a clear mandate in favor of the rule of law, equality before the law, and the liberation of institutions,” student activist Filip Ubović told the media. “We are starting to implement this mandate immediately, without waiting for the formation of a new government.”

The movement has called for the resignation of numerous top officials, including the police chief, the commander of the anti-terrorism unit, and the director of the Information and Security Agency (Bia). They have also urged the continuation of investigations into high-profile corruption cases and murders, as well as the initiation of new inquiries. The demands come the day after the resignation of the director of the Serbian public broadcaster Rts, who was accused of biased reporting during the protests. In one of his most significant public appearances since election night, Vucic accused the movement of exercising “real terror,” stating that he intends to remain on the political scene to lead the opposition party. “We will be a strong, fierce opposition,” he said.
