(Adnkronos) – Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, almost 81, won a fourth term in the runoff against Flavio Bolsonaro last Sunday.

The left-wing leader secured 51.7% of the votes, against 48.2% for the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, according to official results.

Brazilian left-wing president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made a stunning comeback on Sunday, securing an electoral victory against right-wing senator Flavio Bolsonaro, who had clearly defeated him in the first round.

The left-wing icon, who will turn 81 on Tuesday, defied all odds, winning an unprecedented fourth term at the helm of Latin America’s largest country.

According to official results, he secured 51.75% of the votes against 48.25% for Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, who had entered the elections confident of his lead in the polls.

With Lula’s victory, Brazil averted a conservative wave that saw numerous countries – such as Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Peru – shift to the right, supported by US President Donald Trump.
