Ulcerative colitis, new data from the Verdict study on vedolizumab

20 Ottobre 2026

(Adnkronos) – Takeda has announced new results from the Phase 4 Verdict study, the first prospective, randomized trial to evaluate a treat-to-target approach aimed at achieving disease clearance in ulcerative colitis, a therapeutic goal that integrates symptomatic, endoscopic, and histological remission in the absence of corticosteroids.

The study, conducted in adults with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis – a group note informs – showed that, in patients who achieved the assigned target, achieving disease clearance significantly prolonged the time to the first disease-related complication compared to symptomatic remission alone, with a risk reduction of approximately 70%. 52.1% of patients assigned to the more stringent target achieved disease clearance within 48 weeks, demonstrating the concrete feasibility of this therapeutic goal in ulcerative colitis. The Verdict study also provided macroscopic and microscopic evidence of intestinal tissue repair associated with achieving disease clearance, in most cases in biologic-naive patients. The safety profile observed over the 96 weeks of the study was confirmed to be generally consistent with the already known profile of vedolizumab, without highlighting new safety signals.

The results were presented at United European Gastroenterology Week 2026 and published in the ‘United European Gastroenterology Journal’.
