(Adnkronos) – At least 14 people have died and seven others were injured in the collapse of an illegal gold mine in the Nariño department, in southwestern Colombia. Local authorities have announced the end of search and rescue operations. The department’s governor, Luis Alfonso Escobar, stated that “entire families perished in the tragic catastrophe.” The mine is located in an isolated area, surrounded by rainforest, accessible only by sea or small planes. Armed rebel groups also operate in the area, and they have been asked to allow rescue forces to reach the site.
