(Adnkronos) – The Trump administration is reportedly working on a plan for the formation of an Israeli national unity government, in which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would remain in office for a maximum of two years before definitively retiring from politics. This was revealed by the Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom, according to which Washington is pushing, through diplomatic contacts with key Israeli figures, for the creation of a broad and stable coalition, free of the most extremist components. The project would involve an alliance between Netanyahu’s Likud and Yashar, the new party led by former Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, with the aim of ending regional conflicts and reaching new peace agreements with Arab countries, starting with Saudi Arabia. The Trump administration is also reportedly pressuring Riyadh to join the Abraham Accords, offering in return greater security cooperation, including the sale of F-35 fighter jets and the construction of a civilian nuclear plant.
According to rumors, Eisenkot’s party would however set “several conditions” for joining the coalition: Netanyahu’s binding commitment to leave politics within the agreed timeframe, the repeal of laws approved as part of the controversial judicial reform, and the establishment of a state commission of inquiry into the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023. The plan would be part of Trump’s broader strategy to reshape the balance of power in the Middle East through the expansion of the Abraham Accords and the construction of a regional coalition. According to diplomatic sources cited by the newspaper, Israeli President Isaac Herzog would also be involved in the discussions, although the presidency has denied it. A foreign diplomatic official warned that “a narrow government will not be able to implement the changes and major diplomatic decisions that the Middle East needs.”
