(Adnkronos) – Ads intended to support the difficult re-election campaign of Susan Collins, Republican senator from Maine, instead reached the social media of astonished, and amused, Oregon voters. All because someone confused Portland, the most populous city in the East Coast state, with the identically named city on the West Coast, 2,500 kilometers away. The geographical error, one that elementary school teachers once marked with a blue pencil, was made by the advertising space sales company that the Super Pac Defending Main Street had turned to for a million-dollar digital campaign in support of the moderate Republican.
“The error was identified and the ads were immediately blocked and corrected, and the company will reimburse Defending Main Street for the total amount, no donor funds will be lost,” said a spokesperson for the Super Pac that had invested $25,000 in the digital ad campaign that ended up in the ‘wrong Portland’.
