Germany, exploratory talks Linke-SPD-Greens begin in Berlin

(Adnkronos) – The Left party, the Greens, and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of Berlin have agreed to start exploratory talks for the formation of a regional government in the city-state, two and a half weeks after the September 20 elections. Paving the way in this direction was the achievement of an agreement with a joint declaration on the issue of antisemitism, which has recently been the subject of heated debate.

“We protect the life” of the “Jewish community, we strengthen coexistence and promote peace and understanding,” reads the agreement between the three parties, which defines Israel’s right to exist as “non-negotiable.” “We will strengthen the police and intelligence services in their mission to protect Jewish life in Berlin.” The three political groups have also agreed to strictly avoid any contact with organized crime and to punish any violation in this regard.

Based on this agreement, it was indicated that exploratory talks to verify whether there are sufficient grounds to begin actual coalition negotiations will start immediately. In the Berlin parliamentary elections on September 20, the Left obtained the largest number of votes by a wide margin, securing 25.7% of the preferences. The agreement was preceded by several incidents involving Die Linke, causing concern among potential coalition partners. Among these, an electoral gala of the party, held on September 20, caused a stir. It was attended by the leader of an Arab clan – partly involved in criminal activities – and a controversial pro-Palestinian activist, believed to be linked to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).
