(Adnkronos) – The Constitutional Court has approved the granting of amnesty for the crime of embezzlement that weighs on the leaders of the “procés”, such as the former Catalan president and leader of Junts, Carles Puigdemont. During today’s plenary session, the progressive majority supported the report by the president of the Constitutional Court, Candido Conde-Pumpido, in favor of granting amnesty to the former Catalan minister Dolors Bassa, a member of the ERC party, for the embezzlement charges against her.
The ruling states that the Supreme Court, which has so far refused to grant her grace for this crime, violated the right to effective judicial protection with an “extensive interpretation, contrary to the spirit and purpose of the law” for the Amnesty. The ruling on the Bassa case can therefore also apply to the case of the former president of the Generalitat, and accelerate his return to Spain, after nine years of being a fugitive in Belgium, in Waterloo.
The awaited decision of the Constitutional Court comes the day after Pedro Sanchez called early elections for November 29, after Junts, Puigdemont’s center-right Catalan party, failed last Friday to provide its seven crucial votes to approve the government’s decrees for the housing crisis.
