Tokyo, Oct. 6 (Jiji Press)–Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average Tuesday closed above 70,000 for the first time since July 1, led by artificial intelligence- and semiconductor-related names. The index of 225 major issues listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Prime section gained 737.12 points, or 1.05 pct from Monday to end at 70,683.98. The broader TOPIX index closed at 4,183.56, up 38.34, or 0.92 pct. Buying buoyed a wide range of stocks, especially those linked to AI and chips following the strength of major information technology issues in the U.S. market the previous day, according to market sources. “Investors placed fresh buying in stocks related to AI and chips, which had dipped,” an official of a domestic asset management company said. “Their fundamentals are good, positive AI-related news came in, and buying spread.” END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
