Tokyo, Oct. 5 (Jiji Press)–Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average surged over 1,700 points Monday morning to retake 70,000 briefly for the first time on an intraday basis since July 6. The index of 225 major issues listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Prime section gained 1,709.56 points, or 2.50 pct, from Friday’s closing to 70,019.02 at 10:33 a.m. Buying focused mainly on semiconductor-related and other high-tech issues, following rosy performances of their U.S. peers Friday as expectations for an additional interest rate hike by the U.S. Federal Reserve at its policy meeting this month receded further reflecting lackluster employment data for September.
