(Adnkronos) – The Pentagon’s personnel database has been breached by unauthorized users, exposing sensitive information belonging to a huge portion of military personnel, including social security numbers and details about their roles. Abc News reports this, citing a US defense official, according to whom the breach affected 2.76 million living individuals and another 294,000 deceased. The scope and sensitivity of the exposed information could raise national security concerns, especially since the files included details on duties performed by military and civilian personnel.
“Between October 2025 and July 2026, a small number of unauthorized users gained unauthorized access to personal information within the Defense Manpower Data Center (Dmdc) information system. As soon as the vulnerability was discovered, the Dmdc immediately remedied it,” the official stated. The Defense Manpower Data Center serves as one of the Pentagon’s primary repositories for personnel data and contains information on active and reserve military personnel, civilian employees, contractors, retirees, veterans, and military family members. The agency manages over 60 million personal records.
