(Adnkronos) – Argentine President Javier Milei has threatened international legal action against the United Kingdom if London does not stop the Sea Lion oil project off the Falkland Islands, claimed by Buenos Aires under the name of Malvinas, within two weeks. Milei announced on his social media channels that he has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and his legal advisors to initiate, at the end of the ultimatum, “an international arbitration” against the United Kingdom for what he called “the illegal plundering of our resources through the Sea Lion project,” also threatening to appeal to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
The Sea Lion field, located approximately 200 kilometers from the Falklands and with estimated reserves of 1.7 billion barrels of oil, is expected to be exploited by the British Rockhopper Exploration and the Israeli Navitas Petroleum, which plan to start extraction within two years and claim to have valid licenses issued by the Falkland authorities.
