(Adnkronos) – In Ethiopia, forces allied with the federal government have announced they have taken control of Alamata, in southern Tigray, after days of clashes with rebels on multiple fronts. Federal government forces “have taken control of Alamata” after “intense fighting,” local authorities also reported. And according to the Acled (Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project) organization, federal government forces would have taken control of Alamata.
Federal government forces have been fighting various armed groups since September 23. On that day, after months of tensions, hostilities resumed between the federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). Alamata is located about 15 kilometers from the borders of Tigray territory, along the road leading to Mekelle, 190 kilometers further north.
“National defense forces and the TPF (Tigray Peace Force, an armed faction that emerged last year) have entered the locality” of Alamata, the TPF announced via Facebook, claiming the “liberation” of the city. Until now, fighting had only been reported outside the borders of Tigray territory.
