Tokyo, Sept. 25 (Jiji Press)–Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said Friday that U.S. President Donald Trump expressed concern over the yen’s weakening during his meeting with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in New York on Tuesday. During the bilateral summit at the U.N. headquarters, Takaichi told Trump that the undervaluation of the yen is a problem in general terms, Katayama said at a press conference. In late July, Japanese and U.S. authorities conducted coordinated yen-buying intervention for the first time in about 28 years, seeking to correct the weak yen. Katayama and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have not ruled out the possibility of conducting further coordinated intervention. Such a policy was affirmed at the summit, according to Katayama. The yen has been rapidly depreciating since late last week, with the dollar briefly rising above 159 yen in the small hours of Friday. Katayama said she will maintain close communication with Bessent on various matters, including foreign exchange rates. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
