Tokyo, Sept. 22 (Jiji Press)–A total of five people have been confirmed dead in the eastern Japan prefectures of Kanagawa and Chiba by 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, due partly to landslides caused by heavy rain from Typhoon Dujuan, the 25th typhoon of the year, according to authorities. Six other people are missing in the prefectures, both adjacent to Tokyo. The Kanagawa and Chiba prefectural governments asked for the dispatch of Self-Defense Forces units, and are searching for the missing people in cooperation with police officers and firefighters. According to the Chiba prefectural government, a 51-year-old man who was operating a heavy machine to remove collapsed earth and sand in the city of Sodegaura fell unconscious after falling from a cliff with the vehicle and died later. In the city of Sanmu, Chiba, a house collapsed due to a landslide. A woman in her 70s was transported to a hospital but was confirmed dead. Landslides hit houses at two locations in the Chiba city of Kamogawa, leaving a couple in their 80s dead and two men, in their 60s and 70s, unaccounted for. In the Chiba city of Mobara, a woman in her 80s was found in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest from a collapsed house. Some rivers overflowed in the prefecture. Many houses were flooded in areas along the Takasaki River in the city of Sakura, leaving about 300 families isolated temporarily. In the Kanagawa city of Yokosuka, a landslide crushed a house shortly before 2 p.m. Monday. A resident in her 60s was found from the collapsed house by firefighters around 9:30 p.m. the same day, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Mud flowed into housing in Yokosuka and the neighboring Kanagawa city of Miura, and a couple in their 70s in Yokosuka and two women in Miura, one in her 20s and the other in her 30s, went missing.
