(Adnkronos) – Three South Korean officers were injured in an explosion near the border with North Korea. The Seoul army announced this, specifying that the incident occurred south of the Military Demarcation Line within the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), one of the most fortified and mined borders in the world. Two of the injured officers were rescued by helicopter, while a third was reportedly transported by land before being transferred by helicopter, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said. It was not immediately clear whether the explosion was caused by a North Korean mine, a South Korean mine, or another explosive device.
The DMZ is a buffer zone 248 kilometers long and about four kilometers wide that divides the Korean peninsula since the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War. Although the zone is officially demilitarized, its northern and southern borders are among the most fortified in the world and remain littered with anti-personnel mines.
