(Adnkronos) – The leadership of the Spd, the German Social Democratic Party, partner of the Cdu and Csu in the federal government coalition in Germany, intends to organize a convention in December. According to reports from “Der Spiegel” and Ard, the party’s presidency and executive board have reached an agreement on the matter. The convention is a reaction to the Spd’s electoral results and aims to discuss the party’s programmatic orientation within a broader circle. During today’s meeting, some members of the party’s executive board had initially called for an extraordinary congress; among them were Juso leader (the young social democrats) Philipp Türmer and Bundestag deputy Annika Klose, as reported by “Spiegel”. However, the proposal did not gain a majority within the committee. The party leadership then agreed, as an alternative, to hold the convention. The difference between the two events is that in an extraordinary congress, votes could also be cast on representatives, for example on the two leaders Lars Klingbeil and Bärbel Bas. A convention, on the other hand, serves exclusively for programmatic debate. The party leadership emphasizes that in December, the discussion will not be about representatives, but rather about how the Spd intends to position itself in terms of content within the coalition and beyond.
