(Adnkronos) – Clear support for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz after the CDU’s defeat in Saxony-Anhalt and on the eve of the September 20 vote in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania comes from the eight regional premiers who are members of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). “Political Germany needs stability now more than ever. In this situation, what matters most is unity, determination, and a clear direction from the German Christian Democrats,” the eight regional leaders said in a statement obtained by Dpa.
So far, Merz has resisted all calls for resignation, emphasizing that “giving up is not an option,” and the support of eight of the country’s sixteen regional heads of government, who wield significant powers in the upper house, the Bundesrat, is a clear sign of unity. “Citizens can be sure that we will address their problems. As regional heads of government, we want to and will do our part in this, together with the chancellor,” they stated.
