(Adnkronos) – Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has announced that he will resign from office by September 26, after his return from the United States, to participate in the election campaign for the October 25 elections. “I will resign immediately after my return from New York, on September 25 or 26,” Vucic stated at a press conference, responding to a question from broadcaster N1.
The Serbian president, local media report, has dissolved Parliament and called early legislative elections for next month, acceding to one of the main demands of the anti-government protest movement that emerged after the collapse of a canopy at Novi Sad railway station in November 2024, which cost 16 lives. “We have experienced strong turbulence on the domestic political scene over the past year and a half. We need election results that clearly reflect the will of the people,” Vucic declared. The elections were initially scheduled for December 2027.
The protests, mainly led by students and fueled by accusations of corruption against the authorities, have gradually subsided, but the student movement has announced that it will present its own list in the elections. Vucic, in power as prime minister or president for over a decade, recently announced his intention to resign from the presidency after the call for elections to participate in the campaign, hinting at a possible return to leading the government.
