Tokyo, Sept. 11 (Jiji Press)–The Japanese government on Friday adopted control measures to prevent the spread of damage caused by the red-necked longhorn beetle, an invasive alien species in Japan that threatens trees including cherry and plum. The measures include a plan to set goals for halting the expansion of areas damaged by the pest, scientifically known as Aromia bungii, by 2030, as well as providing financial support to affected local governments. The central government will hold a briefing session for municipalities as early as this month. “We will engage in systematic and wide-area pest control to enable its eradication in Japan,” Environment Minister Hirotaka Ishihara told a press conference after a task force meeting. The government will encourage 22 of the country’s 47 prefectures, where damage has been confirmed, to develop regional pest control strategies, while urging other regions to implement preventive measures and remain vigilant for early detection.
