USA, 27-year-old socialist wins Dem primaries in Providence, is favorite to become mayor

10 Settembre 2026

(Adnkronos) – Democratic socialist David Morales defeated incumbent Providence Mayor Brett Smiley in the Democratic primaries in Rhode Island, marking another victory for the party’s left wing ahead of the November elections. Morales, a 27-year-old state representative supported by Senator Bernie Sanders among others, is now the clear favorite to become mayor of the state capital, a traditional Democratic stronghold.

Morales’ victory continues the advance of democratic socialists in the primaries, following successes in various local and congressional competitions. In November, several candidates from the area are aiming for new victories: Morales could thus join Mayors Zohran Mamdani of New York and Katie Wilson of Seattle, while Janeese Lewis George is favored in Washington and Nithya Raman challenges incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in Los Angeles.
