Tokyo, Sept. 10 (Jiji Press)–Japan’s National Police Agency said Thursday it has appointed three forensic medicine experts as advisers on issues related to DNA analysis, with the aim of preventing misconduct following improper DNA tests found at the police department of the southwestern prefecture of Saga. The three are Kyoto University professor emeritus Keiji Tamaki, Nagoya City University professor emeritus Yasuhiro Aoki and University of Tokyo professor Kunihiko Kurosaki. They will help ensure appropriate DNA examinations by advising the NPA about issues it should be careful about when conducting inspections of and giving guidance to local police departments. The advisers, with a two-year term, will also assist the agency when problems occur while offering training to employees at crime laboratories of prefectural police departments. In its special audit of the Saga prefectural police department, the NPA found 239 cases of improper DNA analysis by a former employee at the local department’s crime laboratory.
