(Adnkronos) – Iceland has summoned the United States ambassador following the publication by US President Donald Trump, on his social network, of a new map showing the island as belonging to American territory. The Icelandic Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this. “The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir, yesterday summoned US Ambassador Billy Long to clearly communicate to him that this image was completely inappropriate,” a ministry spokesperson wrote in a message to AFP.
Donald Trump published on his social network Truth Social a “map” showing the United States, Central America, Canada, Greenland, and Iceland covered by the Stars and Stripes flag. The American president, who usually publishes messages of this kind, did not add any caption to the publication. Since its independence in 1944, Iceland has never had an army and relies on NATO for its security, in addition to a bilateral defense agreement concluded with the United States in 1951. Donald Trump’s persistent ambitions regarding Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory – whose eastern coast is less than 300 kilometers from Iceland and which the American president had mistakenly confused with Iceland in January 2026 – have shaken some certainties regarding their relationship, without however putting it into question.
By rejecting, with a referendum on August 29, the resumption of negotiations for accession to the European Union (EU), Icelanders have expressed their attachment to the status quo, which combines European economic integration – the country participates in the single market through the European Economic Area – with an Atlanticist orientation in defense matters.
