(Adnkronos) – Two paintings were abandoned in the gardens of the Renoir museum by the thieves who, this morning, shortly before 6 am, had stolen four paintings from the Auguste Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer (French Maritime Alps). The newspaper Nice-Matin reports that the four stolen paintings are: Portrait of Madame Pichon (1895); Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano (1910); Coco Lisant (1905); and Jeune femme au puits (1886). It is not yet known which of the stolen paintings were abandoned.
The city mayor’s office stated that “everything possible is being done” to recover the two missing paintings and apprehend those responsible. The office added that the break-in was carried out by people “clearly organized, equipped, and well-informed” and that French museums are facing “a new form of organized crime targeting works of art.” “All law enforcement agencies are fully mobilized,” a spokesperson said, adding that the Municipal Police, National Police, and investigative services are present in the French Riviera location.
